Satin, Fur, and Classic Noir: A Christmas Lookbook in Edinburgh

It’s that time of year again. Hot beverages warm our fingertips, twinkling lights line the streets, and festive music fills the air. There’s magic on every street, in every storefront, and in every gesture.

Edinburgh is particularly magical at Christmas time. As the city becomes draped in sparkling lights and festive decorations, it becomes a winter wonderland that is hard to resist. The gorgeous Christmas markets that line Princes Street are a feast for the eyes, with funfair rides and countless stalls to warm your stomachs or fill your shopping bags. Further up, the incredible Dome stuns onlookers with the grandeur of its architecture and festive décor that transports you to another world.

From the Old Town to the Christmas Markets, Edinburgh offers the most elegant backdrops for your festive fits. Whether it’s warm furry layers or sleek and sparkly holiday ensembles, this city is the perfect place to flaunt your festive flair. Its cobbled streets and historic buildings are straight out of a storybook - perfect for enhancing your classic holiday outfits.

So, what essentials do we need for our winter wonderland wardrobe?

A Night in Noir

Classic and versatile, black is such an underrated colour choice at Christmas time. It has a timeless elegance to it that makes it a perfect canvas for sophisticated glam.

There’s no better place for sophisticated glam than during a gorgeous evening at the Dome in Edinburgh. When lit up in all its Christmas glory, this structure is truly a sight for sore eyes. With its twinkling lights, gold-embellished décor, and a spectacular Christmas tree centrepiece, the Dome offers a magical landscape.

With such beautiful surroundings, I went for a subtle and sleek black look, pairing a slash-neck knit jumper with a satin-finish mini skirt embellished with a diamante clip. Heeled knee-high boots and a black fur jacket elevated this outfit even further and gave it a classy yet glamorous look. Perfect.

Fur Trims & Brown Hues

Brown is one of our A/W colour protagonists, and it’s clear to see why. With its warm hues and colour versatility, brown palettes carry us seamlessly through the colder months. And, when paired with fur, this is a match made in heaven.

Faux fur, whether its a subtle trim or an all-over statement piece, is perfect for adding a hint of luxury to your fits whilst also keeping you nice and warm. Fur collars, cuffs, and hem details give outfits that cute and subtle wintery look, or you can go full glam with bold fur outerwear.

The Edinburgh markets are stunningly vibrant and give you that warm ‘Christmas is coming’ feeling. The weather, on the other hand, is not so warm - so layers and big outerwear is essential! To brace the wintery magic, I paired chunky knee-high boots with a brown knit dress and a thick, fur-trim aviator jacket. And don’t forget the ear muffs! These were a life saver.

Luxe Leather & Cute Co-ords

Leather. Perfect for layering and making a statement. As an incredibly versatile piece, leather can achieve so many desired aesthetics - from rock grunge to sophisticated glam. Although it may be overlooked as a festive wardrobe pick, leather can be easily dressed up to give that chic, Christmassy look.

For instance, pair leather trousers with a sparkly top for some festive cuteness. Or, pair a leather mini skirt with a chunky knit jumper to get that super cosy but chic look. Or even wear a fitted leather trench coat to effortlessly elevate your outfit and get heads turning. There’s so many variations!

For a night in Edinburgh, I paired some leather bootleg trousers with a cami/shrug co-ord and heeled boots. I am obsessed with this cami set - it’s so simple and yet felt so Christmassy, especially with the white lace trim.

Go on, get experimenting with leather!

LBD’s - A Festive Staple

The little black dress will forever be iconic. Since being popularised by Coco Chanel in the 1920s, the LBD has become an emblem of understated sophistication and a timeless staple in our wardrobes. Its minimalist vibe allows it to be dressed up or down, depending on occasion or personal style.

At Christmas, LBD’s are a perfect canvas for festive touches. Statement jewellery, a luxe fur jacket, or red heels can really make your LBD shine during the holidays.

I paired my pleated LBD with tights, black pointed stilettos, and a black fur coat. It was understated, yet it did all of the talking.

Basically, you just can’t go wrong with a little black dress.
